Give Your Child Time to Respond
The world moves quickly, and adults often expect quick answers. Some children need more time to process what has been said, work out what they want to communicate and decide how they want to respond.
Slow the Moment Down
After you ask something or model a word, pause. Around 10 seconds can be a useful starting point, but it is not a rule. Some children may need less time and others more.
Avoid Rapid-Fire Questions
Try not to follow one question immediately with another. Repeated prompts such as “Come on”, “Show me” or “What’s taking so long?” can add pressure before your child has had a chance to respond.
Wait After Modelling Too
If you model a VOIS word or picture, pause afterwards. Your child may answer with VOIS, speech, a gesture, a look, a sound or another form of communication.
Watch, Don’t Just Listen
A response may not always be verbal. Give yourself time to notice what your child is doing with their eyes, body, hands and device.
