Using VOIS During Playtime

Play is often one of the easiest places to model communication because your child is already engaged in something they enjoy. Keep VOIS close and use it as part of the fun.

Playing with a ball

You are kicking or rolling a ball backwards and forwards.

You might model: My Turn, Your Turn, Go, Stop or More. If your child needs assistance, model Help Me.

Let Play Create the Communication

You do not need to ask questions throughout the activity. Comment on what is happening and model one or two useful words. During colouring you might model a colour or Help. During a turn-taking game you might model My Turn and Your Turn.

Follow What Your Child Enjoys

Use activities that already motivate your child. A favourite ball, bubbles, puzzle, swing or colouring activity can give a word a clear and meaningful purpose.

Do Not Model Everything

There is no need to press every word on the screen. Choose the words that make sense in that moment and keep playing.

Tip: Start with one or two useful play words and repeat them naturally during activities your child already enjoys.
