Using VOIS at Mealtimes

Mealtimes give your child lots of natural reasons to communicate. Keep VOIS nearby, use the food that is actually in front of you, and let communication remain part of the meal rather than becoming a test.

VOIS can become part of everyday moments such as breakfast, without turning the routine into a lesson.

Snack time

Your child is standing with you in the kitchen and wants yoghurt from the fridge.

You might say: β€œYoghurt?” while tapping Yoghurt on VOIS. If they want more, model More. If they are finished, model Finished.

Use What Is in Front of You

Set up your Food and Snacks category with foods and drinks your child actually knows and sees regularly. If you are pouring juice, tap Juice while saying it. If you are offering yoghurt, tap Yoghurt while you talk about it.

Start With Single Words

You do not need to begin with a full sentence. One meaningful word is enough. As your child becomes familiar with the board, you can model combinations such as I + want + yoghurt.

Respond to Every Form of Communication

Your child does not need to press a button every time you model something. If they point, look, gesture, make a sound, speak or use VOIS, respond to the communication.

Tip: Start with foods your child sees regularly. Familiar choices make it easier to connect the picture, the word and what is happening.
